Finding Focus

Finding Focus

October 18, 20232 min read

Struggling with focus is a real thing—especially when the world is falling apart. Continually checking news headlines interrupts our routine, yet we want to stay updated as events unfold. With so many feelings and thoughts swirling around us, it sometimes feels like we are living in limbo. Just waiting for the next stage, or for the next shoe to drop.

So how do we remain focused? How do we continue with our daily grind? How do we keep moving forward while our thoughts are elsewhere?

Here are a few tips that may help:

Keep shining our light. In a dark world, we need to shine all the more. Let’s keep our words and actions bright and beaming. If we focus on shining our own light, we may also set an example for others to follow.

“Let your light shine so brightly that others can see their way out of the dark.” Katrina Mayer.

Take baby steps. When our minds are dealing with overload, or overwhelm, breaking things down into smaller goals or steps can help. Try choosing one thing to focus on at a time. Setting shorter focus sessions can also help.

Prioritize self-care. Sure, self-care may seem selfish at a time like this, but getting adequate sleep and making healthier food and beverage choices is even more important during times of chaos and stress.

Surround ourselves with a support network. We all need the support and love of family or friends during times of uncertainty. Lean on others and let others lean on you.

Keep praying. “Do not be anxious about anything,” Paul reminds us, “but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” - Philippians 4:6 (NIV).

Put on the whole armour of God. We are living in trying times, but we have the armour of God as an aid to help us. Don’t just take advantage of one or two pieces of armour, let’s use them all!

Be prepared. You’re up against far more than you can handle on your own. Take all the help you can get, every weapon God has issued, so that when it’s all over but the shouting you’ll still be on your feet. Truth, righteousness, peace, faith, and salvation are more than words. Learn how to apply them. You’ll need them throughout your life. God’s Word is an indispensable weapon. In the same way, prayer is essential in this ongoing warfare. Pray hard and long. Pray for your brothers and sisters. Keep your eyes open. Keep each other’s spirits up so that no one falls behind or drops out.
