Changing Focus

With another year almost over and so many items remaining on my to do list, lately I’ve been feeling overwhelmed. And sometimes when I feel overwhelmed, I suffer from paralysis. Which means I do nothing.

How do I choose one thing, when they are all important? How do I prioritize? And if I do figure out the one thing, how do I stay focused when everything else competes for my attention?

As I was venting about something the other day, a Bible verse sprang to mind.

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Philippians 4:8

Whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirablethink about these things. Can we put aside anger, resentment and overwhelm and only think about these things? Or, as the NKJV says, meditate on these things?

If energy flows where focus goes, can we go a step further and focus our task list on these qualities? Can we choose the pure and lovely tasks? Can we pick the admirable and noble tasks?

This week, as I listened to an entrepreneurial webinar about planning for next month, one participant said, “Focus on being of service.” How fitting. Being of service to others can be true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable.

So as we go about our week, and conquer tasks on our to do list, think about what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable. Mediate on these things. Stay focused on these things. And then let your energy flow into them.
