Finding Peace

Finding Peace

July 12, 20232 min read

When Jesus arose in the boat, he “rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!””

Do we sometimes hear him saying that to us? Stop your whining. Stop your complaining. Stop your bellyaching. Stop your anguish. Peace, be still!

Do we listen?

My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord,
Nor detest His correction;
For whom the Lord loves He corrects,
Just as a father the son in whom he delights.
-Proverbs 3:11-12

Rebuke means to criticize. And we’re told that God rebukes those He loves. Just as a father or mother corrects their children, God corrects us. He aims us toward the straight and narrow. He loves us. He wants the best for us. And we need to let Him. We need to be still and quiet and let God work in our lives. We need to stop fighting Him. Stop trying to do it our way.

Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
-Hebrews 12:11

We were never promised an easy life. Nor were the disciples. But if we learn to listen to the Lord and stop our emotional storms from destroying us, we’ll achieve the Peace we so desperately need.

Jesus rebuking the wind reminds me of Moses standing at the Red Sea with all the terrified Israelites. The Egyptians were racing toward them in their chariots, dust flying, the pounding of horses’ hooves echoing in the night. And in front of them was the enormous Red Sea—too deep and too wide to cross. They were trapped.

Then Moses said to them, “Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever.” Exodus 14:13.

Do not be afraid. Stand still. God is working in our lives. The Peace is coming.

“Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.”
-Psalm 30:5
