Watch and Work

Watch and Work

October 11, 20232 min read

“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him. Matthew 24:42-44.

Are we ready?

Are we watching?

Are our lamps filled with oil?

As we head into a new season and a new quarter, what is our focus? What are we working on? Perhaps we should ask, are we focusing on the right things? Are we working on the right things?

As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. Matthew 24:37-39.

Jesus explained in the Olivet Prophecy that as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be when he returns. People will eat and drink. People will live their lives. But he added, “they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away.”

They knew nothing.

Let me repeat that. They knew nothing.

How much do we know? What do we need to learn more about? Can we share what we know with others?

“Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns. Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. Matthew 24:45-47.

Are we faithful and wise servants?

Are we doing what is expected of us? Do we know what is expected of us?

“It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns,” Jesus says in verse 46, or as it is translated in the Living Bible, “Blessings on you if I return and find you faithfully doing your work.”

In this season, let’s watch for the Lord’s return. Let’s be ready and continue to study so we aren’t found ‘knowing nothing.’ And while we watch and wait, let’s faithfully work.

Refrain thy voice from weeping, and thine eyes from tears: for thy work shall be rewarded, saith the Lord.”
- Jeremiah 31:16
