After Jesus calmed the sea, his disciples went from fear of the storm to fear of the man at the back of the boat. They went from Jesus questioning them on their lack of faith to witnessing him perform a miracle.
After their harrowing night, the disciples were not the same men that entered the boat.
As we reflect on our journey with Jesus, are we the same person we were when we started? Have our lives changed? Has our faith increased? Are we less fearful of the storms, or the threat of storms, that surround us daily?
“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
“But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”
And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
Matthew 7:24-28.
Jesus calmed the sea. Even the wind and the waves obeyed him. Why? Because he built his life on the Rock.
Is our life built on the Rock? Do we, like Abraham, follow our called path, even if we don’t know where we are headed?
Or do we doubt?
James, the brother of Jesus, reminds us that “he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.” James 1:6. Unlike rock that is solid and firm, wind can be unpredictable. If we’re driven and tossed by the wind, we may end up far away from our chosen path.
The disciples doubted that night. They needed their Rock.
We may not always know the path that God is pulling, pushing, or directing us toward, but we need to remain faithful and sure, and stop doubting. We need to build our life on the Rock.
From the end of the earth I will cry to You,
When my heart is overwhelmed;
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
Psalm 61:2.
When we stand at the Judgement seat, will we be more fearful of Jesus’s admonishment of us than the storms in our lives?
Will he ask us, “Why are you fearful? Why do you have no faith?” or will we hear those words, “Well done, good and faithful servant….”
“When you come out of the storm, you won’t be the same person who walked in. That’s what this storm’s all about.”
